Learn How to Work with Willow

What will you learn about?

How to harvest willow and weave into existing willow structures.  Live willow planting and making cuttings and growth hormone solution.  How to plan a willow structure and lay the ground works.  Planting, weaving and shaping of willow.  Harvesting, storage and preparation of old willow for weaving useful and decorative pieces.

Who are the teachers?

The workshop will be lead by Marion and Flor Burke, owners and creators of Crann Og Eco Farm.  Other team members will prepare refreshment breaks and lunches.

What experience do they have with willow?

Marion and Flor have 20 years of experience working with willow and this experience will be evident when you view the matured willow features at Crann Og.  The whole team has many years combined experience hosting small workshops and events at Crann Og and other venues.

Why is Crann Og a great place to learn about willow?

The willow features are extensive and vary in purpose and scale.  Crann Og is an ‘eco-venue’ focussing on ecological sustainability, ecotourism, education and community building.  We are recognised by Ecotourism Ireland as a Gold Certified Ecotourism venue, ratified by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

About the Workshop

What Happens on the Workshop?

On Saturday morning we all gather at Crann Og Eco Farm from 9:45am,  aiming to make a start at 10am after meeting each other over a cuppa.

Then Marion and Flor will show all the existing willow work and features at Crann Og, explaining the function and inspiration of each feature.  During this show and tell they will explain how you will be working with willow during the workshop.

From here on it is a fully hands-on experience: learning about harvesting willow and weaving last season’s growth into existing or new willow structures, cutting and storage of willow, making growth hormone solution from cuttings, planning a willow structure and laying the ground works, planting and spacing of willow, creative and fun willow creations.  There will also be some time spent working with older willow for weaving of handy and decorative pieces.

There will be plenty of information, tips and good craic!  At comfortable intervals there will be tea/coffee breaks and each day we will all sit down to a hearty and generous lunch prepared by other members of the Crann Og team.

There will be plenty of time for note taking, photos and questions for Marion and Flor.  Residential participants will be treated to a generous breakfast on the Sunday morning at 8:30am before the second day of tuition.
