Dolphin Hotel, Inishbofin

Certification: Ecotourism Ireland Gold (first hotel on an Irish island to receive this award) County: Galway (Inishbofin Island, off the Connemara coast) Type: Family-run eco hotel, 11 rooms

Dolphin Hotel is the first hotel on any Irish island to receive Ecotourism Ireland Gold certification. It is a small, family-run property on Inishbofin, an inhabited island off the Connemara coast in County Galway, accessible by ferry from Cleggan. It was the first Irish island hotel to achieve formal Gold ecotourism certification and offers eco-tourism guided experiences including birdwatching and island walks as part of its programme.

The Certification

Ecotourism Ireland Gold is assessed against the criteria of the Sustainable Tourism Network (formerly Sustainable Travel Ireland), which operates as a GSTC-recognised framework equivalent to international sustainability standards. Gold certification requires documented environmental management, biodiversity practices, community engagement, and verified performance across energy, water, and waste. For island accommodation, the logistics of meeting these criteria are considerably more challenging than for mainland properties.

The Dolphin Hotel’s Gold certification confirms it has met these standards in an island context, where supply chains, waste management, and energy supply are structurally more complex.

Inishbofin

Inishbofin (Inis Bó Finne, Island of the White Cow) is a small inhabited island 8km off the Connemara coast. The island has a permanent population, a working harbour, a history of fishing and farming, and an extraordinary quality of light that has made it a destination for painters and writers for generations. It has no chain accommodation and no mass tourism infrastructure.

Inishbofin is one of Ireland’s most intact island communities. It is accessible only by ferry from Cleggan, which means a stay there requires a deliberate choice to disconnect from the mainland. The Dolphin Hotel is the island’s main hotel and the certified eco option for stays on Inishbofin.

Eco-Tourism Experiences

The Dolphin Hotel organises guided eco-tourism experiences for guests including birdwatching tours and guided island walks. Inishbofin is a significant bird habitat with populations of corncrake, chough, and several wader species. These guided experiences are part of the Ecotourism Gold assessment rather than a marketing add-on.
