It also holds ISO 14001 certification, the internationally recognised environmental management system standard. It is a member of the Burren Ecotourism Network.

This is a 4-star hotel that has reduced its carbon emissions by 90% over five years through documented, systematic effort. It achieved carbon neutral status in January 2021. In 2025 it added 90 solar panels to its roof. The hotel’s primary power source is a 220-kilowatt turbine on the River Inagh, which supplies 100% of the hotel’s electricity when the river is at full flow.

These are not marketing claims. They are independently verified, documented, and substantial.

The Certifications

Green Hospitality Carbon Neutral (Carbon Neutral12 GREENMark): Green Hospitality Ireland’s carbon neutral verification, awarded January 2021. This requires the hotel to have measured, reduced, and offset its emissions to an independently verified carbon neutral position. The Falls Hotel measured its emissions from 2016, achieved a 90% reduction over five years, and earned verified carbon neutral status.

ISO 14001: The internationally recognised environmental management system standard. ISO 14001 certification requires documented environmental management processes, independent third-party audit, and continuous improvement. It is one of the most rigorous general environmental management certifications available to any type of organisation.

Burren Ecotourism Network: The hotel operates in alignment with the Burren Geopark Code of Practice and is connected to the wider network of certified eco tourism businesses operating in the Burren landscape.

The Energy System

The Falls Hotel sits on the River Inagh in Ennistymon. The 220-kilowatt river turbine installed at the property generates enough electricity to power the entire hotel when the river runs at full flow. In 2025, 90 solar panels were added to the roof, producing an additional 39kWh of clean energy.

This is one of the most genuinely renewable energy setups of any hotel in Ireland: a working hydropower turbine on a Clare river, supplemented by rooftop solar, providing independently verified clean electricity to a 4-star hotel.

The Hotel

The Falls Hotel is a 4-star property with spa, leisure facilities, and rooms overlooking the River Inagh and its cascades. Ennistymon is a small town in north Clare, within easy reach of the Cliffs of Moher (20km), the Burren (15km), and the Aran Islands ferry at Doolin. The hotel is a natural base for exploring the full north Clare and Burren landscape from a certified eco property.

Beyond the energy system, the hotel has implemented comprehensive waste management including composting and recycling, three beehives producing honey for the kitchen, cultivated wildflower areas for pollinators, and regular riverbank clean-up programmes.
