Hotel Doolin

Certification: Green Hospitality Platinum, Green Hospitality Carbon Neutral County: Clare (Doolin, Wild Atlantic Way) Type: 4-star boutique hotel

Hotel Doolin holds Green Hospitality Platinum accreditation, the highest tier within the Green Hospitality Programme, and achieved verified carbon-neutral status in 2019, making it Ireland’s first carbon-neutral hotel. It is one of only seven hotels in Ireland to hold Platinum accreditation, and the only one to have combined that with independently verified carbon neutrality.

These are documented, independently assessed credentials, not marketing claims.

The Certifications

Green Hospitality Platinum: The highest level of the Green Hospitality Programme, Ireland’s own hospitality sector environmental certification. Hotel Doolin achieved Silver in 2013 and Platinum in 2015, and has maintained Platinum accreditation through annual independent audit. Platinum certification is held by just seven hotels across the entire country.

Carbon Neutral Certification: Awarded by the Green Hospitality Programme in 2019. Carbon neutrality was achieved through comprehensive carbon measurement from 2016 onward, systematic energy reduction, investment in green electricity, and offsetting residual emissions through the planting of native Irish woodland trees near the hotel. By 2023, the hotel’s total CO2 output had been reduced to 24 tonnes per year. The hotel has committed to net-zero status by 2029 in partnership with the Fifty Shades Greener sustainability consultancy.

The Hotel

Hotel Doolin is a 4-star boutique hotel in Doolin village on the Wild Atlantic Way, 6km from the Cliffs of Moher and at the departure point for ferries to the Aran Islands. The hotel is the only accommodation in Doolin of this scale and combines a strong sense of place with an exceptional certification record.

Doolin is one of the most-visited villages on the Wild Atlantic Way: the combination of Cliffs of Moher access, Aran Islands ferry connections, the Burren National Park, and the village’s reputation for traditional Irish music make it a significant destination. Hotel Doolin is the certified eco option for this location.

Awards and Recognition

Hotel Doolin has received a number of external recognitions for its sustainability record including Irish Medium-Sized Green Organisation of the Year (2019, 2021) at the Green Awards, the Green Team Sustainability Award (2021), and the Chambers Ireland CSR Award (2019).
