AC Hotel Belfast
Antrim
Northern Ireland has eleven independently certified eco properties across Belfast, Derry, the Antrim coast, and the Mourne Mountains in County Down. The certification framework here is primarily Green Tourism, the UK-based eco-label aligned with GSTC global sustainable tourism criteria. Several Belfast properties also hold Green Meetings accreditation.
Belfast has nine certified eco hotels, more than any other single city on the island. The combination of Dalata Group properties (Clayton Hotel Belfast, Maldron Hotel Belfast City), Hastings Hotels (Europa, Grand Central), and independent certified properties (Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast, Titanic Hotel Belfast, AC Hotel Belfast) makes Belfast an unexpectedly strong destination for eco-conscious accommodation.
Clayton Hotel Belfast and Maldron Hotel Belfast City both hold Green Tourism Gold as part of Dalata’s portfolio-wide 2024 certification.
Europa Hotel Belfast and Grand Central Hotel Belfast, both operated by Hastings Hotels, hold Green Tourism Silver. The Europa is one of Ireland’s most historically recognised hotels. The Grand Central is the island’s tallest hotel, opened 2018, with a rooftop Observatory Bar overlooking the city.
Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast is a 5-star boutique property on Great Victoria Street that achieved Green Tourism Gold in 2026, one of the most recently certified properties in the directory.
Titanic Hotel Belfast occupies the restored Harland and Wolff headquarters and drawing offices at Titanic Quarter. It was the first organisation on the island of Ireland to receive both Green Tourism and Green Meetings Silver certification simultaneously.
AC Hotel Belfast by Marriott holds Green Tourism Silver and adds a contemporary design option to the certified Belfast portfolio.
Derry city has two Dalata-operated certified hotels: Maldron Hotel Derry and Clayton Hotel Derry, both holding Green Tourism Gold from the 2024 portfolio-wide certification. Both properties are within or adjacent to Derry’s famous 17th-century walled city, one of the best-preserved medieval walled cities in Europe.
Derry is a UNESCO Creative City of Music and a significant cultural tourism destination, with the Guildhall, the Museum of Free Derry, and the Peace Bridge connecting the Cityside and Waterside all within walking distance of both certified hotels.
The Salthouse Hotel in Ballycastle, County Antrim, holds Green Tourism certification and sits on the north Antrim coast, close to the Giant’s Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, and the ferry to Rathlin Island. It is the only certified eco hotel directly on the Causeway Coastal Route.
Slieve Donard Resort and Spa in Newcastle, County Down, holds Green Tourism Gold. A 5-star Victorian hotel at the foot of Slieve Donard, the highest of the Mourne Mountains, built in 1898 and operated by Hastings Hotels. The Mourne Mountains are one of Ireland’s most celebrated landscapes, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Green Tourism is the primary eco-certification framework for Northern Ireland’s hospitality sector. It is aligned with GSTC global sustainable tourism criteria and independently assesses properties across energy, water, waste, biodiversity, and community engagement. Gold is the highest tier. Silver indicates strong but not top-tier performance.
Northern Ireland properties can also hold Green Key, Green Hospitality, and EU Ecolabel certifications, though Green Tourism is most widely adopted across the NI hotel sector.
Northern Ireland’s certified properties are concentrated in its two main cities and along the Causeway and Mourne coasts. The Antrim Plateau, the Causeway Coast and Glens Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Mourne Mountains, and the Fermanagh Lakelands offer landscape comparable to the west of Ireland, with a less-visited quality that appeals to eco travellers seeking less crowded routes.
Republic of Ireland certified properties connect naturally with Northern Ireland options: Donegal’s four certified properties are within easy reach of Derry, and Dublin’s sixteen properties form the other bookend of any island-wide eco itinerary.
Eleven certified eco properties: nine in Belfast, two in Derry, one on the Antrim coast, one in the Mournes.
