Learn About Seasonal Food Foraging in Ireland

What is Food Foraging?

Seeking and gathering wild (naturally occuring) food in nature that exists all around us, but for many of us is unknown.  Thanks to experts like Forage Workshop Leader Mary Bulfin, this knowledge is not lost.  It’s surprising to most people when they attend a forage workshop, just how much food there is growing all around the countryside, in hedgerows and even on one’s own property!

Who is the Teacher?

Forage Workshops at Crann Og Eco Farm are lead by wild food expert Mary Bulfin.  Mary conducts workshops and classes all over Ireland in different settings, and including all age groups.  Mary is also a chef and a natural organic food enthusiast.  Mary is also a small producer of fine natural products and has many recipes to share and recommend.  With a life time of experience Mary leads a highly informative, yet friendly and relaxed workshop with lots of good craic!

What Happens on the Workshop

You will meet other wild food enthusiasts from different walks of life.  Mary will take you out foraging for food on the grounds of Crann Og and surrounding woodlands.  During the foraging which lasts several hours, Mary will impart her knowledge and share her passion for her craft.  After foraging we return to the Crann Og main house, where together we will combine the food foraged with other organic ingredients or dishes Mary has brought along to compliment the season, to create a meal for the group.  This will be followed with more sharing of knowledge with Mary, question and answer time and even some more foraging if time and weather permit.

Why is Crann Og a great place to learn about foraging?

Crann Og is an ‘eco-venue’ focussing on sustainability, ecotourism, education and community building.  We are recognised by Ecotourism Ireland as a Gold Certified Ecotourism venue, ratified by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.  We maintain the gardens, grounds and vegetables using permaculture principles and encourage wild growth in many areas of the property.  We have created endless habitats for wild plants and animals and are situated adjacent to a large oak woodland with rich biodiversity.  To compliment this we have organic vegetable gardens and tunnels, small orchards and herb gardens.  Crann Og has been purposely created for such events.

What Happens on the Workshop?

About the Workshop

On Saturday morning we all gather at Crann Og Eco Farm from 9:45am,  aiming to make a start at 10am after meeting each other over a cuppa.

Then Mary will lead the group on a forage, first within the grounds of Crann Og, and then extending to surrounding woodlands, hedgerows and anywhere else Mary’s keen eyes and nose discover hidden treasures.  During the foraging Mary will be sharing her wealth of knowledge about all the wild food to be found, in each micro habitat, depending on the season.

Once Mary has demonstrated what is to be found and how to find it, be sure you will have the foraging bug and those primal instincts will kick in!  You’ll then be quite surprised, if not astonished, at just how much food is growing all around you and your new found interest in foraging.

There will be plenty of information, ancient knowledge and good craic!  Once the foraging is complete the group will return to the Crann Og main house for refreshments and nibblies.  Then we will set about creating a delicious meal for the whole group, all the while learning more about the foods foraged and how to prepare and eat them best!
