Ard Nahoo Eco Retreat

Certification: EU Ecolabel (EU Flower) County: Leitrim (near Dromahair, County Leitrim) Type: Eco retreat and yoga school, self-catering eco cabins

Ard Nahoo Eco Retreat holds the EU Ecolabel, the European Union’s official environmental certification for accommodation, also known as the EU Flower. It is an award-winning eco retreat and yoga school in the hills of County Leitrim offering three self-catering eco cabins built using Irish wood, insulated with hemp, and powered by on-site wind turbines.

The EU Ecolabel is administered at EU level and requires demonstrated performance across energy, water, waste, chemical management, and biodiversity. It is a rigorous EU-level credential that distinguishes Ard Nahoo from properties that make eco claims without third-party assessment.

The Certification

The EU Ecolabel for Tourist Accommodation is awarded by member state accreditation bodies and requires compliance with mandatory and optional criteria covering energy consumption, water consumption, waste production, use of renewable energy, chemical inputs, and management of outdoor spaces for biodiversity. It is renewed following re-assessment.

The Cabins

Three eco cabins are available, each built from Irish timber, insulated with hemp (a natural insulation material with very low embodied carbon), and fitted with wood pellet stoves. Each cabin includes a fully-equipped kitchen, antique and up-cycled furniture, and access to the shared grounds. Wind turbines on the property supply the electricity.

The combination of construction materials, heating systems, and energy supply makes Ard Nahoo’s cabins a practical demonstration of low-impact building rather than a marketing claim. The EU Ecolabel independently confirms this performance.

Eco Retreat and Yoga

Ard Nahoo also operates as a yoga school and wellness retreat, offering courses and workshops. The retreat has been recognised as one of Ireland’s top sustainable wedding venues and is part of a growing network of slow tourism offerings in County Leitrim.

The Setting

Ard Nahoo sits in the hills near Dromahair, a village in southeast Leitrim close to the Sligo border. The surrounding landscape of drumlin hills, loughs, and broadleaf woodland is characteristic of this part of Ireland, which is one of the quietest and least visited areas in the country.
